About Te-Kworo Foundation
Te-Kworo Foundation is a grassroots not-for-profit making a vital and visible impact among disadvantaged girls in communities in northern Uganda. It was founded in 2002, under a Kworo tree in the camp, by Alice Achan, an Acholi survivor of the conflict, in response to the plight of abducted girls returning from LRA captivity with babies. Over three thousand girls and their dependants have benefited from an education through Te-Kworo since 2008, and more than 60,000 people have been impacted by its clinic and mobile health programs since they were launched in 2017.
This is only the beginning. In 2022, as communities look to claw back from the pandemic, Te-Kworo is uniquely positioned as a force for change among an impoverished and at times forgotten population in northern Uganda. The Te-Kworo model can be replicated across sub-Saharan Africa for both education and maternal health, as a means of addressing the plight of vulnerable girls.
Te-Kworo Foundation’s response to revitalizing educational opportunities and health services for girls is locally directed, deeply rooted in community, and closely attuned to community need in the north of Uganda. While many international agencies and NGOs have moved on to other crises, Te-Kworo has addressed local issues in a ground-up approach since 2002. Partnership with the newly formed Te-Kworo Foundation in Australia, through a small group who’ve walked alongside the northern Ugandans since 2006, brings new possibilities for greater impact for disadvantaged girls.
