About Our Auction
Oumani has been battling cancer for 3 years. As a single mother, Oumani is desperate to beat this dreaded disease and fight to stay alive for her son Mischa, who lost his father a few years ago. Oumani was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2012 at 38 years of age. Also known as the silent killer, ovarian cancer causes about 800 deaths every year in Australia. Research indicates 1200 women are diagnosed with the condition, many of whom only discover the disease after it has spread extensively and is challenging to treat.
This unfortunately is Oumani’s experience, since her diagnosis she has had a hysterectomy followed by rounds of chemotherapy treatments which seemed to work for a while but soon the cancer had returned and spread to her liver, back of her lung and tubes to her heart. She beat it twice and was in remission until last year when Oumani was completing a Community Welfare Diploma placement at Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre. Unfortunately during her placement with Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre, a new cancer mass was found.
Currently Oumani has been given a 12 month diagnosis. A drug known as Avastin has been manufactured that may help. However, it is not yet subsidised by the Australian health system with costs coming up to $2,000 every three weeks for the patients in her situation. Avastin has only been approved for treating patients with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer as a first line treatment but is not registered to be administered to patients who develop a recurrence of the disease.
This is the reason her friends and the Centre have decided to come together to support Oumani and raise much needed funds through this online auction of donations collected from her friends in the community.
