About Our Auction
I've been receiving treatment for stage 4 leiomyosarcoma--an incredibly rare type of cancer. In the US, it's a type and stage that's considered untreatable. I've been searching for a viable treatment path, and in August of last year, I found it with the help of my naturopath and an incredibly forward-thinking team of doctors and specialists in Mexico. I do have my own health insurance, but the types of treatments and therapies I've been receiving unfortunately aren't covered. All of my treatment has been out of pocket and is approaching a total of $100,000.
Funds raised beyond our goal will go towards seeding a new non-profit that will provide hardship grants to dressage professionals in region 6 that find themselves temporarily unable to work due to illness or injury.
About Emily Sorensen
I'm a professional dressage rider, trainer, and coach based in the PNW near Seattle. A life-long horsewoman, I began riding at the age of 8 and have continuously had horses in my life since then. I began my professional career directly from junior status and have exclusively competed self-trained horses from their start to FEI.
In 2019, after beginning the year with a cancer diagnosis, surgery and recovery, I ended the year by competing at the US Dressage Finals in Lexington, KY at Grand Prix, finishing 6th. 2021 brought news of cancer reoccurrence and the beginning of a new path towards health and beating the (allegedly) unbeatable. Treatment and therapies have been positive thus far, showing good response and excellent lab results.
I hope in sharing my story, cancer becomes a little less scary, a little less dark, and a lot more hopeful.
