Thus far in 2024, 4,567 pets have made their way to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Some were strays, and other surrendered by their owners or confiscated by the county due to neglect or mistreatment.

With so many pets coming through the Shelter's doors and a limited budget, the Shelter has to make tough decisions about how it can provide for each pet. In some cases, this means that otherwise adoptable pets might not have a second chance if expensive medical treatments or special needs costs exceed the county budget.

This is where the Friends steps in. We raise awareness — and money — to help improve the quality of life for all of the shelter pets and give them a chance to find their forever home.

In 2023 Friends provided $292,199 in funding to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter which represented over 20% of their operating budget. 

Thus far in 2024 lifesaving and life-improving medical and/or dental care has been provided for 82 shelter pets; parasite prevention for all dogs, cats and rabbits - 3,959 pets, and TNR spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations for 480 community cats. Friends also provides every adopted dog a collar, tag and leash, and every adopted cat a tag and collar. We provide enrichment items, senior pet boosts and so much more!
