BLRR Fall Auction 2023

Brookline’s dogs are carefully evaluated, and potential adopters are screened, in order to make the best match. We successfully place more than 100 Labradors each year! We know we can’t save them all, but we are making a huge difference to the ones we do save. Our volunteers work tirelessly in support of our mission – they are the heart and soul of our rescue. However, all of our financial support is received through private donations, nominal adoption and surrender fees, and fundraisers such as our online auctions. Every dollar we raise helps to cover veterinary and other expenses we incur in caring for and matching our rescued Labs to their perfect forever family. Your support is crucial to our mission of saving more Labs. Together, we will make a difference!

Thousands of success stories and many repeat adopters make all of our efforts worthwhile.

Lexi, pictured on the left, is a 5-year-old former breeder momma who was rescued in June 2022. After Lexi came into foster care, her foster family noticed that she was “leaking” urine. We hoped that Lexi simply had a UTI and that antibiotics would resolve the incontinence issue. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

As Lexi went through testing to determine the cause of her incontinence, it was discovered that Lexi had chewed leashes and bed sheets in her stomach. Apparently, Lexi had a habit of eating things she shouldn’t. Lexi needed surgery to have these removed.

Lexi was referred to a specialist at VRC for her incontinence issues. The surgeon found that Lexi had a double ectopic ureter. The tubes that drain urine were not connected to Lexi’s bladder and instead drained outside the bladder to her reproductive organs or urethra, resulting in leaking and chronic infections.

Lexi went through a complicated surgery to spay her and correct her double ectopic ureter. She was expected to spend a couple of days in the hospital after the surgery. Unfortunately, Lexi had some complications and had to spend ten days in the hospital. The biggest disappointment was that the surgery did not resolve her incontinence.

Sometime later, Lexi got into trouble again eating something she shouldn’t have. She had another surgery to remove that. While that was being done, Lexi also had a Coaptite procedure to address her incontinence issue. Sadly, that failed, too.

After four major surgeries/procedures and $12,500.00 in expenses, Lexi still leaks. We made the decision to stop treatment because it’s been hard on Lexi and her incontinence will never be resolved. Lexi’s wonderful foster family has done a great job handling the issue with doggie diapers and “fancy pants”. They keep a close eye on Lexi to watch for signs of a bladder infection. They have lovingly agreed to keep Lexi as a permanent foster so that she will always get the best care possible.

We are thrilled to be able to help dogs like Lexi, but our ability to provide this care is dependent on the donations we receive and the money brought in by our fundraisers. Our adoption fees do not even come close to covering the expenses we incur in helping the dogs in our care live the lives they deserve.

100% of the proceeds from our Fall Auction will go towards our substantial vet expenses. Our hope is that the funds we raise will allow us to continue to provide quality care to many dogs. So please, BID EARLY, BID OFTEN, BID HIGH!

Once again, we would like to thank A. H. Davis & Son Roofing & Siding (West Chester, PA) for their generous donation in covering our auction's shipping expenses!
