About The Education Partnership and Giant Eagle
MISSION: Our mission is to provide school supplies to students and teachers in under-resourced schools across Southwestern PA.
HSITORY: In 2008, our founder Justin Brown attended a summit on “teacher free stores” and returned with a vision. At the time, he was working as Director of the Pittsburgh Community Storehouse, which donated gifts-in-kind to economically disadvantaged communities and individuals in the area. But Justin sensed that the program’s impact could be greater if it narrowed its focus.
And so, inspired by the success of teacher programs in other cities, and by the critical need for educational support in ours, the organization adopted a more refined business model and a new name to match. In 2009, Storehouse for Teachers was born, a Board of Directors was formed, and 501(c)(3) status was obtained.
Thanks to thousands of hours of help from hundreds of volunteers, Storehouse for Teachers purchased and renovated a warehouse in the West End for its headquarters, held its first in-school supply distribution and ran its first annual Back-to-School campaign alongside Giant Eagle—all in its first year.
In May 2011, the organization officially completed its pilot program and became Southwestern Pennsylvania’s first teacher resource center distributing school and classroom supplies at no cost to students and teachers in need. And to better reflect that work, the nonprofit was renamed The Education Partnership.
Since then, we have now served more than 374,770 students in 191 schools and given out more than $50,000,000 worth of school resources. We serve Pre-K through 12th-grade schools in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. Schools in these counties are eligible if 70% or more of their student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).
The Education Partnership is now well-positioned to meet the ever-changing needs of the 191 local schools in the 8 counties we serve through our Teacher Resource Center, STEAM Hub, and Adopt-A-School Programs.
