Our unique outdoor classroom is the signature program we are the most proud of. Begun in 1971, Hacienda’s one-acre outdoor science classroom was created out of a concrete parking lot! With many years of love, digging, and planting, it is now a living laboratory for young scientists to explore plant and animal communities native to the Santa Clara Valley and surrounding foothills. Students form a positive, personal connection with the natural environment from these memorable sights and experiences in Hacienda’s “nature acre.” The ecosystems students study in Hacienda’s outdoor classroom include oak woodland, coast redwood forest, valley grassland, riparian zone (streamside area), chaparral, pond & marsh. Because our unique outdoor classroom is maintained entirely by Hacienda’s parents, students & dedicated staff, we fundraise annually for its upkeep.

Hacienda Involved Parents & Staff (HIPS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the educational experience of every child at Hacienda Environmental Science Magnet Elementary School. Every parent/guardian is welcome and strongly encouraged to be a part of HIPS!!
