About Our Auction
The posthumous edition, issued by the estate of Jim Steg (1922-2001), uses a copper plate he created in 1961. Steg's widow, Frances Swigart, has meticulously printed this second state, limited edition in celebration of Jim’s centennial year. This edition is printed with black ink on white paper, then painted with watercolors. Frances Swigart referenced vintage prints in the series to replicate Jim's original colors and tones. Each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts newly established printmaking program.

Jim Steg (1922 - 2001) was a master printmaker and an esteemed educator. A restless innovator, Steg mastered nearly every known printmaking technique – including photoresist etchings, serigraphs, woodcuts, and ink toner drawings – and invented some of his own. Over a career spanning more than half a century, Steg continually pushed the boundaries of his art to produce prints that firmly established him as one of the nation’s most innovative and exhilarating printmakers. Steg was also a beloved teacher who mentored hundreds of students during his 43-year tenure at Newcomb College. His work is included in the permanent collections of more than sixty museums and institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.
About New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts
The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts is dedicated to the preservation of Fine Art’s past and the development of its future through an engaging education in a welcoming environment.
The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts opened its doors at 5256 Magazine Street in 1980. Since its inception, the school has promoted the importance of classical tradition in the visual arts. The school’s original focus in Painting, Drawing and Sculpture remains the foundation of our school. Over the course of more than 40 years, NOAFA has expanded and now offers classes in film, photography, ceramics, youth programming, abstraction, and mixed media. The school also operates two gallery spaces on campus which host essential community building events featuring internationally recognized artists.
Our faculty are passionate about teaching and approach each student at their own level. The faculty share a foundational belief that through learning to see carefully, and crafting skill sets in the foundations of the fine arts, we better ourselves as human beings. This core philosophy endures through the growth of the school. The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts is proud of its current faculty, students and alumni who fill our studios with moments of joy and artistic thought.
