Bid for Hope

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Salvation Army Ches Penney Centre of Hope Food Bank, and other Rotary community projects.

The Rotary Club of St. John's Northwest was sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. John's and received its charter on June 12, 1965 with 35 members. Our Club has sponsored two new Rotary Clubs in District 7820: the Rotary Club of Clarenville and the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast.

Since 1965, we have been involved in the formation of a number of Newfoundland branches of charitable organizations, and in some instances, we continue to serve on their boards. These include the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Kidney Foundation, Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador and the Neighbourhood Goodwill Association, for whom we also purchased a permanent home in 1976.

In 1982, the St. John's Northwest Rotary Club built the $2,500,000 Janeway Hostel (at the former Pleasantville site), a service for parents of children receiving hospital treatment. In 1988, we built Rotary Manor, a $4,100,000 housing complex for seniors, single parents and people with physical disabilities.

We have worked with schools and community centres, providing library books and dictionaries, supporting reading programs, supplying playground equipment, offering youth leadership development workshops, and making it possible for deserving young individuals to participate in international school exchanges. And since 1990, we have sponsored the Rotary Music Festival, the largest festival in the province for school bands and choral music.

On the international level, our Club has supported medical clinics in Africa and schools and medical clinics in the Philippines. Plus, we have made a multi-year commitment to cooperate with Rotary International to eradicate polio around the world, a goal that will soon be met.
