About Our Auction
Tumaini La Maisha, Their Lives Matter Ireland, and Their Lives Matter UK form a collaborative trio of distinct NGOs collectively referred to as "We Are TLM" with the shared vision- that no child suffers or dies unnecessarily from cancer in Tanzania.
In Tanzania, where approximately 4,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, the ability to afford travel, medical care, and related expenses remains an elusive dream. However, partnering with Muhimbili National Hospital, Tumaini La Maisha (which translates to "hope for life" in English), and the National Children Cancer Network (NCCN) together, they have established a comprehensive support system that offers free care encompassing chemotherapy, precise diagnostics, medical training, play therapy, transportation, nutrition, and much more. This support extends across 15 locations throughout the country.
Celebrating 13 years of dedicated service to children with cancer and their families, Tumaini La Maisha Tanzania has seen remarkable growth. Over the years TLM has transitioned from caring for fewer than 100 children annually to reaching 1,000 new children in 2023 through a national network of cancer centres. Importantly, survival rates have also improved significantly, rising from 30% in 2011 to 50% by the close of 2023.
Yet, there is much work ahead, as an estimated 75% of Tanzanian children with cancer still suffer and die needlessly from a disease that Tumaini La Maisha is committed to treating without charge. Tanzania's vast size, with a population exceeding 60 million, means that most individuals lack the means not only for medical treatment but also for transportation to medical facilities. However, the stories of survivors, including two who are now part of the team at Muhimbili National Hospital and Tumaini la Maisha serve as a testament to the fact that childhood cancer does not have to equate to the loss of a child. With the right treatment and timely intervention, childhood cancer can be treated.
In the current year, Tumaini La Maisha has proudly announced the launch of their 5th Bid for Life Art Auction, in collaboration with their steadfast partners at Killruddery House and Gardens in County Wicklow, Ireland. Killruddery House will host a live Gala Ball, culminating in the auction's closing on the 9th of November.
The auction itself will commence on the 19th of October, leading up to the grand finale in mid-November. Dr. Trish expressed their hopes, stating, "In 2023, the Bid for Life Art Auction raised over €50,000 to support children's cancer services. We are hoping that this year, with your help, we will be able to raise even more much-needed funds."
So, let the bidding begin, and together, let's make a difference in the lives of these children!
