In October 2017, Northern California faced an environmental crisis that would soon spread to the rest of the country at an unprecedented rate. The series of wildfires that continue to spread through California have taken lives, destroyed homes and businesses, and continue to threaten communities throughout the state. Many cannabis cultivators have been among those in the community to have lost homes and businesses.

The opportunity to enter and thrive in legal cannabis continues to dwindle for longtime California growers and their networks. Many of these growers are not well positioned to obtain permits, licences, and equipment due to the enormous expense. For those affected by the fires, this will be especially difficult: Cannabis is a dramatically under-insured crop and bureaucratic complications prevent growers from getting loans or qualifying for federal recovery funds.
