About First Parish in Portland, Unitarian Universalist
First Parish is a Unitarian Universalist congregation in Portland, Maine. We are a theologically, culturally, and economically diverse congregation, welcoming and affirming all people who seek a religious community while practicing, creating, or discovering a personal spiritual path.
Members and visitors to our congregation identify as lifelong Unitarian Universalists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, agnostics, atheists, Humanists, Buddhists, Pagans, as well as those who continue to seek. We are united by love, a sense of justice, a passion for truth, and service to the greater community. We commit ourselves and our resources to “Nurture the Spirit, Grow in Community and Help Heal the World.”
What First Parish does for the community:
First Parish is a leader in lending aid to the unhoused by providing a warming shelter in the dead of winter when it is life threatening for folks to be outside all through the night.
Once per month First Parish prepares a Community Dinner. A delicious home cooked meal is provided for free to anyone in the community, especially those who suffer from food insecurity.
First Parish's Wabanaki Ally Team works to support the Wabanaki Tribes to regain their sovereignty and land rights in the land we call Maine and to heal the wounds from generational trauma.
First Parish's Climate Action Team works to raise awareness and inspire action in our community to improve the state of our Planet. Just recently they partnered with local organizations to bring award-winning environmentalist Bill McKibben to First Parish to facilitate a discussion about Question 3 on the November 2023 ballot and Pine Tree Power.
First Parish supports Black Lives Matter by participating in rallies to raise awareness of racial injustice.
The First Parish Governing Board read the book "Me and White Supremacy" by Layla Saad to deconstruct internalized racism in themselves and to learn how to be antiracists and to center marginalized voices.
