About F.I.S.H. OF SANCAP
November 2021 marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of FISH’s 40th anniversary! FISH is a human services organization focused on 'neighbors helping neighbors' with a vision to create communities where all people have the support they need to thrive. Our mission is to enrich the lives of all people in Sanibel and Captiva Islands by neighbors helping neighbors with social services, education and assistance.
It began as simple kindnesses over 40 years ago, in the kitchens and out of cars of island neighbors. Today, FISH offers over 30 programs and services in the areas of food programs, island-based education, senior & social services, and helping hands & financial assistance. As we’ve grown with the years, our scope of service has evolved and broadened. From our food pantry, educational workshops, scholarships, and senior programs for dignified independence, to providing emergency help with expenses and disaster relief, FISH truly offers something for everyone.
Throughout the current pandemic, FISH has been ground-zero for response and assistance to those we serve. Last year alone we distributed nearly 6,500 meals to homebound seniors; 2,000 backpacks to kids learning virtually; nearly 250,000 pounds of food to families in need; and paid 494 rent, medical and utility bills for those in crisis. In addition, we are most proud to have provided 1064 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at our pop-up clinic for island seniors and other at-risk members of our community.
