About Shell Valley Volunteer Fire Department

The Shell Valley Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1976 and receives no financial assistance other than donations. As expenses continue to rise the need is even greater to make sure our Fire department is adequately equipped and ready to go at a moment's notice. Besides serving the Shell area, they cover about 800 square miles including almost to Hyattsville, Bear Creek, Tater Ridge, and to the County line in the Big Horn Mountains. They also assist the communities of Greybull, Basin, Hyattville, and others when needed. These faithful volunteers not only answer calls to property fires but also fight grass fires and assist with forest fires. Presently there are 17 trained firefighters, including 6 EMTs. To outfit a firefighter, the basic cost is $4,000 per person. Add to that the cost of gas, maintaining the Firehall, and other essential operating needs, funding is always needed and greatly appreciated.
