About Our Auction

My name is Leah Franklin, and I'm in sixth grade at Hunter College Elementary School in Manhattan. Last year, I read a feature in the New York Times by Eliza Shapiro and Brittainy Newman about the 114,000+ homeless children in the New York City school system. I was horrified to learn about the incredibly challenging circumstances that so many of my peers face every single day, and I decided that I needed to try to do something to help them. That's how the idea for this auction got started.

The books below were generously donated by their authors in support of the fight against child homelessness (thank you, thank you, thank you, AMAZING and TALENTED AUTHORS, for your kindness, encouraging responses and participation!!!). Winning bidders will receive a personally signed copy of their book(s), and Win -- an incredible organization that provides safe housing and services so that homeless women and their children can actually break the cycle of homelessness -- will receive all of the money we raise.

It's a real Win-win situation!!

P.S. After I started working on this auction, Samantha Shapiro published another really powerful and upsetting article about homeless kids in New York ("The Children in the Shadows: New York City's Homeless Students") that everyone should read.
